It takes a diverse team of talented individuals with various backgrounds to safely accomplish Hanford’s demanding cleanup work and manage 16 nuclear facilities. Our employees’ unique abilities help us navigate the complex and hazardous work environment we face each day.
The nature of work at Hanford’s Central Plateau and along the Columbia River corridor requires crews to be disciplined and highly trained in radiological risk and knowledgeable of a robust suite of protective procedures. Often, these tools are brought to bear in an environment that is ever-changing, as new hazards associated with legacy waste sites and buildings are identified and evolve. Additional factors including chemical and significant industrial hazards as well as extreme weather conditions make the work environment even more challenging.
Safe operations are built on a foundation of commitment and accountability. We accept that accountability; nuclear safety culture is a leadership responsibility. In our Safety, Health, Security, Quality, and Environmental policy, the commitment is stated simply: “If we can’t do it safely, we won’t do it.” That is our approach to safety in tackling the unique challenges ahead.
Ethics: Essential to our success
