Goal 3: Optimize groundwater treatment

Remove and treat contaminants from groundwater, shrink the concentration of contamination, and prevent contaminant plumes from reaching the Columbia River. Objectives that support this goal include the following:

  • Operate six existing groundwater pump-and-treat systems at the 100 and 200 Areas throughout the contract period, treating more than 12 billion gallons of groundwater to remove radioactive and nonradioactive contaminants by 2028
  • Optimize and expand groundwater treatment at the ZP-1, KR-4, and HR-3 operable units
  • Complete the 100-N apatite barrier enabling River Corridor active footprint reduction by 220 square miles
  • Monitor, sample, and characterize groundwater and waste sites operating units to analyze risk and enable future cleanup decisions
  • Continue to support Hanford Site cleanup operations and monitoring through installation and sampling of groundwater wells and realignment of wells to support accelerated groundwater remediation and new extraction targets for uranium, technetium 99, and carbon tetrachloride
